Original 75 Pfennig German Notgeld issued by the city of Vechta in 1922.
One side features a detailed historical view/plan of the Vestung Vechta, the old fortress complex, making this a particularly interesting local-history issue.
The reverse shows a large black dog tied to the regional legend of Lambert Sprengepiel, a figure said in local folklore to have been condemned after death to wander the heath in the form of a black dog.
The verse reads:
“Hier zählt er nun zu seinem Leide – in alle Ewigkeit die Heide.”
Natural English translation:
“Here, to his misery, he must now count the heath for all eternity.”
That folklore connection makes this a much more interesting piece than a standard town-view Notgeld.
